04.03.2008 - Three years after it failed in a prosecution for fraud against the construction companies involved in the project, which involves carving a giant hollow in the island’s most famous mountain to insert a massive sculpture by the late Basque artist Eduardo Chillida, the regional executive has been ordered to pay over two million euros to the firms concerned and meet the legal costs of the civil case it brought subsequently to recover money already paid.  In a hard-hitting ruling, a court in Las Palmas attributed the delays in the project not to the firms but to the company set up by the government to administer the project.  The Tindaya affair, in which up to 18 million euros have already been spent and lost, has plagued successive regional governments since the end of the 1990s. The current government says the project is still very much on track and should be completed in 2014.
