Bottlenose dolphins need greater protection in these waters

 According to the organisation since the introduction of the 1992 Habitats Directive Spain and Portugal have had 18 years to include marine animals and indigenous life into European Nature 2000, an EU wide network of nature protection areas, but to date their progress in this area has been insufficient, particularly in the protection of the bottle nose dolphin and the loggerhead turtle.  The European Commission has recently repeated its request to Spain to increase its list of species under protection and extend that to include all habitats and marine species listed under that same 1992 directive. As well as dolphins and turtles the list includes reefs, submarine caves and dunes.

Ricardo Aguilar, director of investigations for Oceana Europa, said he was surprised that “such emblematic species as the bottle nose dolphin or the loggerhead turtle didn’t enjoy adequate protection” in these waters.  He also remarked upon the fact that there wasn’t a single protected marine zone for the conservation of reefs, a habitat which was a breeding ground for coral, sponges and other forms of marine life.
