22.07.2010 - The last eight years have seen a gradual but increasingly pronounced downturn in fortunes, which local shops, bars and restaurants say is fast becoming irreversible. Juan Carlos Alvarez, the chairman of the Puerto Rico Business Association, says although the cause is largely due to the popularity of the nearby Amadores beach (particularly its free parking), the blame must also lie at Mogán council’s doorstep for not modernising the resort. “We depend heavily on tourists from mainland Spain for much of the year but numbers have been falling of late, because we are considered an old holiday resort. Although the beaches may look busy with locals, most of them bring all they need for the day or week-end and rarely spend anything” says Alvarez, adding that bar and restaurant revenue has diminished by 60 per cent in the last four years, with a similar tale being told by Puerto Rico’s many shops.
The association has reiterated its plea for action to be taken to curb the growing number of timeshare touts who operate on the seafront in the resort. “Many days you see up to 20 touts handing out coupons for free taxis to a well-known complex not far from here, where tourists are given a free drink and a tour. The effect on our members is very noticeable” says Alvarez.
