![]() Daily news from the Canaries and the islands' biggest English language newspaper on-line Regional stability Support guaranteed The president of the Canary Islands’ regional government Paulino Rivero has stated unequivocally that as far has his party are concerned the current government pact will last “until the final second of the present term”. He made the statement following some disquiet, saying that “citizens (voters) want work and stability”, warning those who would look to upset the current coalition between his party, the Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular that he “would maintain this government until the end of the current term because this government is working reasonably well”. However this hasn’t stopped some public mud slinging between the current incumbent and his vice president, and regional leader of the PP, José Manuel Soria, who will be his rival for the presidency in the next election, whenever that is held. Most recently the current president, during an interview on Canarian radio, spoke of “a move to emphasis less state and more weight to the individual…if that can be interpreted as meaning the encouragement of an increased participation in society through instruments such as the Citizen Participation law which we have here, great, but if it is really promoting less state involvement in favour of a jungle where only the strong survive, then we are talking about an unbalanced society where those who have the least suffer the costs of the (current) crisis most” and added that it was important to continue to protect the availability of essential state services. However despite what are perhaps ideological differences, both men in question continue to underline the stability of their governing pact.
