 Daily news from the Canaries and the islands' biggest English language newspaper on-line BBC programme Secret Tourist reveals… Early programmes in the BBC’s Secret Tourist series have included references to some less palatable aspects of holidays in the Canaries.  Over in Lanzarote, the investigation centred on sub-standard hotel pools and in this case Machin and her undercover film crew took along pool safety expert Douglas Cameron to inspect the standards and facilities at over 20 hotels. They found 11 to be substandard, with filters failing to keep the pools clean, leading to ‘scrapeable’ scum and bacteria along the pool edges. More worryingly, says Machin, around half of hotel pools were in breach of lifeguard regulations, with attendants caring little about the safety of the users. One lifeguard was filmed reading his magazine throughout his time on duty, from a seat which had a clear view only of the pool bar and terrace but not the pool itself. According to Secret Tourist, the Canarian authorities denied that supervision rules were being consistently broken and emphasised that they had carried out checks on over 1,000 hotels in the islands in 2009.
