 Daily news from the Canaries and the islands' biggest English language newspaper on-line Good news Record year for tourism in Canaries At a meeting of the tourism chiefs of the Canarian Cabildos, headed up by Ricardo Fernández de la Puente Armas, deputy regional tourism minister, the advance figures for 2011 seem to indicate it was a record year for the industry in the islands.  Ricardo Fernández de la Puente Armas stated that the year closed for the islands with “a net increase of over 1.5 million tourists, which represents a 15 per cent increase on a year per year basis." As well as the benefits of the subsidies, the minister also listed the fact that the Canarias had been represented at 43 travel trade fairs as well as participating in a number of important professional tourism conferences. On a national level the islands had also taken part in 42 promotional activities under the Turespaña banner. Attending to emerging markets was noted as important, and the Canaries has seen increases in visitors from France, Italy, Poland and Russia, with a doubling of the numbers travelling from these four destinations alone. The minister listed the priorities for 2012, with improving air connections at the top of the list.
