![]() Daily news from the Canaries and the islands' biggest English language newspaper on-line Self inflicted emergencies Government to bill “reckless adventurers” As predicted here a few months ago, the Canarian government has confirmed that it is to introduce legislation allowing it to charge for the mobilisation of emergency services to rescue people who get into difficulty through their own recklessness. “We have not yet established exactly which situations will generate the charge but, by way of example, clearly if a woman who is seven months pregnant signs up for a challenging hike through Masca she cannot expect the public to foot the bill in the event of problems” explained Santana. Every year the emergency services are called out to rescue scores of elderly foreigners who suffer heart attacks or serious falls while out hiking of trying to climb Mt Teide. It is not just tourists who are to blame, say the authorities: the arrival of snow on Teide always triggers major scares when families who are totally unequipped for the freezing conditions drive up to the volcano and get stuck on the way. Among the cases of recklessness highlighted by the authorities is that of a German tourist who dug a giant hole on the beach at Bajamar in February 2010 and triggered a massive rescue operation, including a digger and a helicopter, when he became trapped under tons of sand after the walls of the hole caved in. Three other regions in Spain (Cantabria, Catalonia and the Basque Country) have already enacted legislation allowing reckless people to be billed directly for the cost of an emergency call-out.
