The make up of the new Spanish government has raised a few eyebrows – and not just male ones – due both to the superiority enjoyed by women numerically speaking, and the positions they hold, however it is to be hoped that once the political dust has settled all the ministers will be judged on the work they do over the next four years as opposed to anything else.  Seven months pregnant, the minister travelled with a medical team that included a gynaecologist. She has also said she intends to visit the Spanish bases in Kosovo and Lebanon in the immediate future, before the birth of her child. While it is to be hoped that Spanish premier Zapatero chose his ministers on the basis of their ability rather than to make a political point, certainly his cabinet has re-sparked debates in Spanish society and beyond as to the role of women, not just in politics, but in daily life, hopefully for the betterment of the position of women in general. PSOE spokesperson Elena Valenciano noted that “Spain has become a world reference point for equality thanks to the determination of the Socialist party and president Zapatero who is working to build a more democratic society, one which reflects the make up of its citizens and is solidly behind laws in favour of equality and the inclusion of women in all walks of life”.
