Tourism
Home rental crack down
It looks like in the coming weeks the Spanish Senate is set to approve a new law that will make short-term tourist rentals illegal.

18.06.2013 - The move comes as part of the ongoing campaign to ensure that homeowners do not rent out their houses independently, something that the hotel trade has been saying undermines the tourist trade for a very long time. However detractors claim that those who rent houses do so because they are looking for a different kind of holiday and will go to other countries, not other kinds of accommodation. Recent times have seen an upsurge of this type of rental, and authorities believe around 20,000 properties will be affected, though this figure could be well below the mark. The new legislation, which has already been approved by Spain's Congress, would give regional governments the power of rental regulation and would make temporary leasing by private owners against the law. Though nothing is decided yet, it seems that the new legislation is set to have far reaching effects.
