Pedestrianisation pay off
The initially controversial decision to turn half of one of the busiest and best-known streets in Las Palmas into a pedestrian zone looks as if it might pay dividends soon in the shape of the arrival of household names in the coffee and fast-food business.

11.09.2012 - Local paper La Provincia reports that companies such as Starbucks and Burger King have already expressed keen interest in acquiring premises on the new pedestrian stretch in Mesa y Lpez and its rumoured that department store El Corte Ingls could well join them. As competition for suitable sites heats up, the city council is urging existing cafeterias and restaurants to take advantage of the fashionable new section of Mesa y Lpez and install outdoor tables and seating as soon as possible. However, the proximity of a bus lane used by over a dozen different routes may make for an unpleasant experience, doubters say.
