Spanish mortgage statistics
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) recently revealed that the average mortgage in Spain during October of last year was 170,872 euros, a rise of 7.7 per cent when compared to the same period in 2006 and 2.5 per cent higher than the figures for September 2007.

16.02.2008 - During October savings banks granted the largest number of mortgages at 58.2 per cent of the total, followed by banks at 31.9 per cent and other financial institutions at 9.9 per cent.

The average mortgage interest rate in savings banks was found to be 4.78 per cent over 27 years, while banks charged 4.99 per cent over 26 years on average.  The vast majority of people opted for a variable interest rate (97.6 per cent) when taking out their mortgage, just 2.4 per cent signed up for a fixed rate.  Within the variables the Euribor was the most popular reference interest rate used at 89 per cent.

La Rioja was found to have the biggest number of mortgaged properties at 642 per 100,000 inhabitants, the region also registered the biggest rises in property registrations. This was followed by the Balearic Islands at 596 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The biggest mortgages were found to be in Madrid at 258,917 euros on average, followed by Aragon at 238,727 euros.  Valencia came top for mortgage cancellations at 287 per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Andalucia at 279.
