![]() News from the financial sectors in Spain and the Canary Islands In Brief > Abolish unfair measures Brussels based organisation European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) has called on all Member States to abolish transitional measures that have been placed on EU ascension countries restricting their labour markets. ECAS claim that the number of Romanians and Bulgarians seeking work in other EU countries since 1st January 2007 has not been significant and that the transitional measures are contrary to “the spirit of the founding treaties”. Tony Venables, director of ECAS, added, “Most emigration from Bulgaria and Romania took place well before accession and continued to involve traditional countries of destination in particular Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. “Restrictions based on exaggerated predictions of an influx of job seekers or a deviation of mobility to countries opening up their labour markets proved unfounded.” Currently 17 out of the 27 EU states have restrictions on labour markets. Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden have all scrapped their restrictions. Bulgaria have welcomed the ECAS report. Betina Joteva, a spokesperson for the Bulgarians mission to the EU said, “We have opened our markets for all EU workers, because that is our understanding of this fundamental right (the free movement of people)”. | Canary Islands - 08.02.2012 - Yesterday's ugly scenes at Bilbao airport, where Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary had to be given a police escort after his provocation of former Spanair employees, prompted a furious reaction against the head of the airline by Canarian MP Ana Oramas. more...
