Summer holiday warning
Leading UK insurer Esure, is advising prospective British holidaymakers to check the weather for their chosen destination before they splash out on their summer holidays.
Esure said that the US, the Caribbean and Asia had become increasingly popular holiday destinations with British holidaymakers, but few checked when extreme weather conditions could affect their chosen holiday spots.

16.02.2008 - In their survey Esure found that eight out of ten booking holidays to the US did not know when the hurricane season kicked off, while almost 90 per cent were unaware when the monsoon season started in Asia.  The research did, however, find that 47 per cent of prospective holidaymakers did check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website to see if there were any warnings against visiting a destination, while 48 per cent checked it out for severe weather warnings.

Jacky Brown of Esure said, “Most people love to jump on the bandwagon of the January sales season.  A holiday deal may look great from the outset, but come holiday time – you could be caught out by flying out to your destination, such as Mexico, during the hurricane season.”

She went on to say, “It’s also important to remember that the government European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) form like the E111 is not an insurance policy.  It provides emergency medical help only, which in some destinations may be very limited.” Perry Wilson of insurer InsureandGo reiterated that the EHIC was not a good substitute for proper travel insurance.  He said, “When you break a leg when you go abroad you may well be covered under the EHIC for the basic medical emergency, but you will not be covered for rescue off the ski slopes and ambulances.

“The problem is that when you have a broken leg, you’re not going to be allowed on the plane unless you’ve arranged with the airline to either have a second seat or go business class.

“So even something like a broken leg, or a broken ankle, can cost you thousands of pounds.” He added, “People have to get away from this feeling about travel insurance being about your flight being cancelled. “It’s not about that.  That is a part of it, but the biggest part of it is medical: accidental damage to yourself and also personal liability if you cause damage to somebody else.”

Holiday booking tips

Adequate travel insurance should be purchased for every person travelling so the unexpected is covered, which could include illness, injury, airport delays and missing baggage.

Ensure that you travel with your insurance documents.  It is vital that you have an emergency telephone number should things go wrong and the policy particulars at hand.

When buying an insurance policy check what is covered and what is not before you take it out. Certain medical conditions are not covered, likewise participating in certain activities are exempt from some policies.

Plan ahead before you embark on your trip abroad. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office's website is a vital source of information.

Esure recommended,  “Make sure that all your vaccinations are up to date and find out about any other suggested medical advice by visiting your healthcare provider.  Follow this advice and be aware of possible health risks during your trip.”
