Roaming charges cut
Good news for tourists using their mobile phones when on holiday in destinations such as the Canaries as from the beginning of July.

17.07.2014 - Under eagerly-anticipated new EU rules, data downloads, calls and texts cost significantly less than previously and holidaymakers will receive less of a bill shock when they return home after their summer stay.  Brussels has issued a press release emphasising the benefits to consumers of its cap on all the charges, which must be observed by mobile phone companies.  Tourists travelling in the EU now pay a massive 25 times less for roaming data traffic than at the time of the last World Cup in 2010.  The maximum charge for a megabyte of data download fell by 55 per cent (€0.45 to €0.20), with the cost of making a calls home down 21 per cent and text messages sent while abroad down by 25 per cent.  The European Commission adds that it is working on legislation to, "Eliminate roaming costs altogether," with the end of the year provisionally set as the target date for elimination, although it will be up to Member States to take the final step and approve the measure.
