Cheaper flights
Chancellor’s welcome change
UK Chancellor, George Osborne, announced earlier this month that air passenger duty (APD) for children under-12 years of age will be scrapped by May next year, paving the way for cheaper family flights.

29.12.2014 - The travel industry has welcomed the decision, acknowledging that families will make significant savings on flights, following mounting pressure about this unpopular tax, but some feel that the government haven’t gone far enough and should drop APD completely.  Carolyn McCall, CEO of easyJet, whose share price rose immediately after the announcement, said, "We support anything which makes travel easier and more affordable, and we hope this is the first step towards the complete abolition of APD."

Wheels are in motion for this to happen, with Osborne going further than requested by MPs, who only wanted to see the tax abolished for under-12s, as he included tax-free economy flights for all under 16s as of 2016.  Making the announcement during his Autumn Statement, Osborne said he wanted to, “Reduce the cost of tickets for families directly”.  He also stated that airlines will be forced to display their fuel surcharges as a separate item on airfares to ensure that drops in oil prices are passed on to customers.

Jason Waldron, product and marketing director at Broadway Travel, said, "This is the best news families have had for a long while.  By scrapping APD for under-12s, the Chancellor has made the family holiday a little more affordable.  There’s no doubt that in recent years the extra costs from the extortionate charges have meant families have had to reassess their holiday plans.”
