05.02.2010 - Fewer people can be as dedicated as Eve Tennent and her team in helping to fight the good fight against breast cancer.   She began her efforts in May 2007 in the London Moonwalk by raising €1,200 from sponsors.  Soon afterwards she decided to get involved in the Nijmegen March in Holland, but she felt it was too soon to ask for more sponsors so she started running her stall in Playa San Juan in July 2007, collecting people’s unwanted items (“we’ll take anything”) and selling them at rock bottom prices from as little as one euro.

Wednesdays in Playa San Juan and Sundays in Alcalá

First efforts from the stall provided £1,750 for the Nijmegen March and a further €500 and €700 for Tenerife breast cancer organisation, Amate, in January and May 2008 respectively.

In October 2008, Eve was able to donate €700 to the southern Walk for Life which was divided between breast cancer projects in Tenerife for the Spanish association against cancer, AECC, and Amate.  The following month she passed a further €2,000 to Amate.

By March 2009, the stalls had produced another €2,000 for Amate and she then organised a charity dinner at the Potato Club in San Juan where another €405 was raised for the same cause.

May 2009 found her once again in the London Moonwalk handing over £1,093.  The stall was going great guns and in June she was able to donate €2,000 more to Amate and during last year’s Walk for Life in December, Eve handed over €2,192 to be divided between Amate and the AECC. With the €2,000 she recently passed over to Amate’s Vice President, Carmen Gloria at the stall, she has raised a total of €10,000 for this charity.

Eve is ably assisted by Ewan, her husband and some loyal helpers, that during our visit included Sheila and her daughter Kerry, over for a surprise visit to celebrate her mother’s birthday.

If you have any surplus items don’t hesitate to take them along.    Eve sells clothes in Alcalá and all other items at Playa San Juan.  You can see what people’s generosity and Eve and her team’s dedication can achieve.  However if there is a lot of surplus stuff, she may ask you to hang on to some of it until she has room to store it.

Get along to one of Eve’s stalls to donate, volunteer, join in and to bag a bargain for a good cause.
