El Médano CEIP - 01.07.2010 -

The brainchild of auxilliary English teacher Kathy Webber, five classes in 5th and 6th years (between 10 and 12 years of age) spent lots of time last term working on producing a school magazine in English. Each class decided on their own title and contents, and pupils worked on layout, pictures, and the final results were laminated and judged.

The judges were myself and professional photographer Stevie James, and from the outset we were both really impressed with the work the children had achieved in such a short time, and given that there are very few native speakers in these years at all they should all be extremely proud of what they produced.

We read each of the five magazines, page by page, and we’re delighted to see that each had very much an individual style and personality, some tending more towards bright and breezy, look taking precedence over information, while others reflected the time and effort their contributors had put into ‘publishing’ a well researched and informative magazine. From pet’s pages to puzzles, fashion, music, recipes, the history of the Canary Islands, and lots of sport, there was oodles of detail, and a great amount of individual commentary which was terrific to see.

We judged on look, content and English (given that this was a project for their English class), quizzing teacher Kathy on how many of the contributions were translated from Spanish, how the young writers had found their facts and whether they had much help on a page by page basis.

In the end it was a tie between two excellent publications. Island Times was produced by class 5B and scored high on all counts, with lots of upbeat personal commentary, a great section on wild animals and loads of yummy recipes. The Super Duper School Mag (SDSM) was the work of class 6A and had some excellent background information on the school and surrounds, helpful info on pet dos and don’ts, had some very professional lay outs and scored ahead of the rest with a back page full of advertising.

Well done to the two winners and also to the three runners up as well as the school’s English language department for getting the publications together.  The end results were very close indeed.  We are looking forward to getting involved again next year.
