Holy row
Church building stymied
A row has erupted in Granadilla after land that was apparently destined to be used for the building of a church was used to construct a civic centre.

Church building stymied

line
00.00.0000 - According to reports a plot of land was handed over to the council by the Tenerife diocese on the understanding that the buildings that the council would erect would be subsequently handed over to the church to be used as part of a new church complex. However it would appear that local authorities have gone beyond the limits of the 1997 agreement and the construction exceeds the agreed barriers meaning in effect that there is now no room to build the church as planned.
The row has political overtones and could also been seen as an electoral salvo, given that the agreement was signed by the previous socialist mayor Jaime Cejas who now claims that current mayor, Carmen Nieves Gasper Rivero, hasnt respected the convention signed by the previous council to erect a civic and social centre in the lower part of the plot of land, leaving the upper part for the church.  However his position would seem to be backed up given that the word from the bishops office is that they have been waiting for over ten months for a reply from the council regarding the matter.
