 Daily news from the Canaries and the islands' biggest English language newspaper on-line San Sebastián You can lead a horse to water... The fiesta de San Sebastián in La Caleta in Adeje has become one of the highlights of the religious as well as tourist calendar for Costa Adeje.  Farmers in Tenerife profess a strong devotion to San Sebastián with numerous claims of miracles and healings attributed to his image. The fiesta held every 20th of January begins with a midday mass, during which livestock and horses are prepared by their owners, who decorate them with brightly coloured ribbons and bells. Children and their parents have a wonderful opportunity to get close to cows, sheep, goats, horses and donkeys as they gather to wait for the procession to begin. With mass over in the church the statute of San Sebastián appears through the church doors, amid cheers from onlookers and devotees. The procession makes its way to the gathered horses and livestock, who followed the saint’s image down to the water’s edge for the blessing of the sea. This is the most anticipated part of the fiesta with each year more and more horses taking part. With lifeguards and a police patrol boat on hand to protect any rider losing his seat in the waves, the horses are encouraged into the sea, with some definitely more keen on the idea of a salty bath than others! Some nervous steeds have been know to throw their riders during their quick retreat from the waves, but no one has so far been injured. The crowds cheer as each rider shows expert horsemanship in negotiating his mount into the steep water’s edge. It’s a delightful combination of the old and new, as the traditional parade of livestock passes the up-market four and five star hotels, to the delight of all present, not to mention the curious amusement of those visiting sun-worshippers taken unawares when the horses take their salty plunge.
