Biker deaths down
Road fatalities involving motorcyclists have fallen by over 40 per cent in the province of Tenerife so far this year but the traffic authorities still feel there is room for more improvement.

Tenerife - 25.08.2010 - Only four motorcyclists were killed on the roads of Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro up to August and the figures suggest last year’s record of 13 deaths will not be matched. The acting head of the Guardia Civil's traffic unit says most serious accidents involving bikers are the riders’ fault and are caused by excessive risk-taking. “Most also involve big bikes of 650cc and above. When you have large groups of riders out for the day, you inevitably get situations of recklessness when they try to show off their prowess,” explained Juan Carlos Ubero, who added that extra vigilance is in place at weekends on several roads in Tenerife which are used by the motorcyclists for their speed demonstrations. Blackspots include one in Guía de Isora and another in Arafo, along with the road from La Esperanza to Mount Teide, which is becoming increasingly popular with bikers for Sunday excursions.
