Alma
Pure dance, pure soul, pure magic
With Alma, the tenth show Carmen Mota and her son Joaquín Marcelo have brought to the Piramide de Arona in South Tenerife, they have returned to their roots, the art of dancing, and let the drama of the dance speak for itself.

Playa de las Américas - 25.05.2010 - Fans of the choreographer will have appreciated her theatrical forays in recent shows, but here the doyenne of Spanish dance brings together a compilation of dances that will leave you reeling! Easily the best show in town, Alma is a highly polished and professional presentation that could grace the stage of any of Europe’s capitals. The troupe are quite simply superb, with the 30 dancers showing a diversity of range and skills and an infectious enjoyment of the dance that is obvious to see. And, as always, costumes and lighting play a hugely integral part in the presentation and both are reflective of the high standards Carmen Mota has set in the past. In the first half of the show Mota presents a number of different dances, interpreting the fusion of Spanish dance with styles from other cultures, including tango and jazz. Capricho Español is emblematic of Mota’s theme of the fusion of the traditional with modern movement and is set to music by Rimski-Kórsakov. Improv, choreography by young dancer Antonio Najarro, shows the group dynamic on stage beautifully. Bailando con Desconocidos bears the emotive touch of Joaquím Marcelo, with tango at is most seductive. Najorro also choreographs Jazzing, which combines a host of styles with brilliant use of castanets. The first part concludes with a stunning dance, by Marcelo, Aires, using the Jota dance from Aragon, and with such energy and enthusiasm, bringing the audience to its feet in appreciation. The second half of Alma sees a traditional harbour setting with live music and song, using the pure Flamenco roots from Andalusia. Interaction between the singers and dancers is reflective of the place Spanish dance has in the country’s social history and traditions, but integrates dance traditions from other parts of the Latin world. If you plan one night out this year make it Alma. The show is on six nights a week (Mon/Wed, 7.30pm, Tue/Fri/Sat 9.30pm, Thur 10pm), children under 12 free (and they supply great booster cushions for smaller patrons).
