Rocket man lands in Tenerife
They came from near and afar to see Elton John and his band at Golf Costa Adeje, probably not knowing what a wonderful surprise they were in for.

Costa Adeje - 05.02.2008 - Diehard fans began queuing as early as 2pm for the concert which was due to kick off at 9pm. Such is the enthusiasm for this artist who has had numerous top ten hits in the United Kingdom, and more in the United States. We met Minerva and Carmen who had come especially from Gldar in Gran Canaria, Javier and Nini from Santa Cruz, Geri, Linda and Elsa from Golf del Sur, Louise and Stacey from Los Gigantes, and many more who had joined the queue early. They all complained of poor organisation relating to the queuing and parking situation; however even though this did indeed appear to be a hiccup, it has to be remembered that this was one of the most prestigious concerts ever staged on the island, and certainly in the south, and the first of what is hoped to be many, organised by  Sun Live Festival Canarias, which is composed of a group of businesspeople from the south received some institutional help in the organisation of the event. All in all, taking into consideration the nature of the terrain and the logistics, they did an incredible job and are to be congratulated. The concert, in the end, made up for everything.

People were allowed into the precinct from 7.30pm and Elton and his Band went on stage with true British punctuality and straight into an instrumental number as people continued to flow in.  Elton, as always, was dressed in style wearing a midnight blue long-tailed jacket decorated with coloured musical symbols covering a purple shirt. The crowd warmed as they launched into The Bitch is Back, and even more when he stood on top of his piano to acknowledge their applause. They followed this with three songs from Eltons 1996 Madman Across the Water album, including Tiny Dancer.

By now the audience was beginning to realise that this concert was totally live, a rarity in this day and age. No prerecorded backings or computer generated percussion this was all for real.  Elton John and his Band went through song after song, delighting the audience with hits and album tracks including I Believe in Love, Take me to the Pilot, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Daniel, Rocket Man, Honky Cat, Sacrifice, Someone Saved My Life Tonight and I Guess Thats Why They Call It the Blues.

By now it was clear to the audience that it was not only they who were enjoying this concert Elton and his Band were clearly making the most of every minute of it, their performances so full of improvisations that it appeared even they didnt want each song to end. Elton introduced the Band members, each one receiving a hearty applause: Nigel Olssen on drums and vocals, Davey Johnstone on banjo, guitar and vocals, John Mahon on percussion and vocals, Bob Birch on bass and vocals and Guy Babylon on keyboards and vocals.

The crowd swayed, waving digital cameras, lighters and sparklers above their heads as we were treated to The Bridge, taken from Eltons 2006 album Captain and the Kid.  This was a song with profound lyrics and perfect harmonies followed by Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, performed solo by Elton.

The Band returned to the stage for the original version of Candle in the Wind Elton seemed visibly moved by this song, even though he was singing about Norma Jean. Things really warmed up with Benny and the Jets, Philadelphia Freedom, Sad Songs Say So Much, Im Still Standing, Crocodile Rock and finally Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting.

The audience thought this was the end as Elton and the Band left the stage, but a few minutes later the superstar returned and spent some time with the people in the front line, signing autographs for some and accepting a red rose from another.  The Band rejoined him on stage for Dont Let The Sun Go Down On Me before Elton John profusely thanked everyone in both Spanish and English and said, You are the best audience.

I wish each and every one of you present - love, health and happiness, and I want to dedicate this song to each one of you.

This fantastic concert ended at 11.40pm with Your Song. Its a little bit funny, this feeling inside, not one of those you can easily hide. I know its not much but its the best I can do. My gift is my song, and this ones for you....
