Summer Special: Golf
Golf Costa Adeje
A warm welcome was extended by Laly, who has worked here since the course opened in 1998. We collected our buggy, with its sophisticated sat. nav. system giving distances in a choice of yards or metres and tee-ed off at our allotted time.

13.08.2010 - The clubhouse provided welcome refreshments at the end of the game and is extremely comfortable with pleasant views out to sea. The locker room has plenty of lockers available free of charge and provides excellent changing facilities. Unusually, this course features the original dry stone walls from its time as a vineyard as hazards crossing some fairways. I played it on a sunny day with only a very light breeze. The first main challenge comes at the third - an attractive par 5 - where you need to drive over a barranco to achieve the optimum position on the fairway. The fourth, SI 5 is a very scenic par 4 with an elevated tee, fairway crossed by dry stone walls dropping down to a green protected by front right greenside bunker on top of cliffs. This hole is surely one of the most attractive in Tenerife, with the fairway sloping down to the cliff top above the sea where the green appears in the distance set amongst tall palm trees. The fifth hole is my least personal favourite with a substantial area of barranco between tee and green filled with cacti - in the middle of which I located my ball! To compensate, the sixth is a straightforward uphill fairway with a many contoured green guarded by another walled hazard. The par 3 seventh is routed over a deep ravine with barrancos on three sides making for a virtual island green which merits its ranking of stroke index 3. The eighth, a double dog leg par 5 is just about reachable in two but beware of the barranco to the right of the fairway acting as a magnet to your ball. The ninth, a long uphill par 4 identified by its MacKenzie green on two levels concludes a very varied and enjoyable front nine. Another MacKenzie green can be found on the twelfth, one of the shorter par fours, easily reached in regulation. However, with the flag on the upper level, putting proves very difficult. The fourteenth also deserves a special mention as it is highly unusual to find a green on three levels in steps, making it even more difficult if the flag is on the middle section and your ball is at the back of the highest level! Finally, the eighteenth has an unusual fairway target area being split into five different sections separated by dry stone wall terracing. STAR HOLE: Par 4 fourth. And so on to The Lakes. Los Lagos is a superb nine hole course, which is the latest addition to the Costa Adeje complex. It can be played separately or together with the front or back nine of the Championship Course. Although this is a relatively short nine hole layout of 2,223 metres and featuring four Par 3s, it nonetheless provides a good challenge to novice and experienced golfers alike. The opening two holes - both Par 4s - are considered the two most difficult by their stroke index and are followed by the first Par 3, which measures 150 metres over a barranco. The fifth hole is possibly unique in the world of golf. It is only a short Par 3, but its length is roughly equal to the drop from the cliff top tee down to the green below, thus forming a right-angled triangle. Vertigo sufferers, however, may not share my enthusiasm as they prepare to tee off by peering over the edge! Equilibrium restored, you are then faced with a long Par 5, which threads its way between the course boundary and a lake and is my ‘Star Hole’ of Los Lagos. An attractive Par 3 over water follows, before the concluding holes - a straightforward Par 4 and a final long testing Par 3 brings the round to a highly satisfying close. It is worth noting that junior golf is encouraged, particularly at Los Lagos 9 hole par 66 course as juniors play free of charge if accompanying an adult. I can report that I found both the Championship and Los Lagos course and greens in even better condition than my last visit. I would also mention how attentive and aware the many greenkeepers are to golfers’ presence; always switching off machinery and moving aside as a player takes a shot. It would be so nice if this was the case on all courses. This course remains a highly popular, renowned and challenging golfing experience which should not be missed. I found the course to be in its best condition since opening twelve years ago. The greenside bunkers are now filled with high quality white coral sand and the greens are fast but receptive. Even though the Championship Course was busy, play flowed well and the round was completed in less than four hours. Costa Adeje is currently offering 18 holes for €57 and 18 holes + Buggy + Full Buffet for €86 per person. GOLF COSTA ADEJE - 38670 ADEJE TELEPHONE 922 710484.
