Las Palmas wins tourist city battle
Las Palmas has won its battle with the Canarian government to be included on the list of tourist towns and cities in the region.

Las Palmas - 24.11.2007 - Under new legislation to be passed by the Canarian Parliament, designation as a tourist town will bring benefits in the form of grants and increased infrastructure funding, including money from the European Union.  The yardstick used by the Canarian government to decide which towns would be awarded the label (the number of tourist beds has to be at least 40 per cent of the official population) automatically ruled Las Palmas out but pressure from the local authorities has led to a U-turn and it now appears that an exception will be made.

The citys tourism councillor, Aday Ruiz, said he was delighted with the news and expressed his thanks to the islands Cabildo for supporting the bid. 550,000 people visit Las Palmas every year for a holiday, a day-trip or on cruise ships and we have a 150-year history of tourism, so it would have been ludicrous to exclude us from the list said the councillor.
