Lack of action by the local and regional authorities could result in one of the most valuable vestiges of native life in Gran Canaria going to waste.

22.12.2007 - Over 20 years ago the remains of an important burial site used by the early inhabitants of the island were discovered in the Maspalomas area.  Plans were announced at the time for a museum to house the bones of the 130 native Canarians and other items found, which experts said were a massive contribution to knowledge of life at the time.

It has now emerged, however, that the remains, duly recorded and labelled, have been sitting all this time in a warehouse which can be seen from the motorway (near the Red Cross station) but whose secret, prior to the publication of the news in the media recently, was known to very few.

A Canarian heritage official has confirmed that preliminary contacts were held in November between various government agencies and local authorities to resurrect the project and begin work to restore the burial site, which is thought to be at least a thousand years old.  One proposal believed to be under consideration is to extract the DNA from the bones and use it to investigate genetic kinship between the natives and current local populations as well as populations from some parts of Africa.
