Abduction Latest
Abduction case makes international headlines
Interest in the ongoing investigation into the background of Marcos Rodríguez Cabrera, the man arrested in connection with a number of child abductions, has reached beyond these shores. The man is accused of trying to abduct at least two young girls in Gran Canaria on separate occasions and has been sent to prison after being identified by the girls before a judge. The arrest followed an intense police operation following the attempted abduction of a nine year old in Telde at the beginning of January, when a man tried to force her into a white van.

Telde - 18.01.2008 - Her screams alerted her family and neighbours and the man drove off.  However following the arrest of Rodríguez she was able to identify him as was another young girl who had also been the victim of a similar attempt last year.

Subsequent to the man’s arrest it emerged that he  was convicted for sexually abusing his own daughter in 2002 but has avoided prison by appealing the sentence, fuelling local speculation that there might be some link between this case and the disappearances of Yéremi Vargas, the seven year old who vanished from Vecindario last March, and  Sara Morales, the 15 year old Gran Canarian girl missing for a year and a half.  However at a press conference called a few days after the arrest, the islands’ senior government delegate José Segura said that there was currently no link between this case and the disappearance of other children on the islands.  Police spent over a day taking samples from the now closed pet crematorium where the man also worked, but despite rumours, as we go to press there is no word of any human remains found, and in fact intensive police searches of property owned by the man, were not thought to have produced evidence linking him to other abductions, despite the media speculation.  Police believe there may have been an accomplice and a second man was detained in Maspalomas after a five-day hunt but was subsequently released without charge.

Days after the arrest, several UK newspapers reported that Portuguese police are investigating possible connections between the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and the attempted abductions in Gran Canaria.  Both the Daily Mail and Daily Express carried stories alleging that officers investigating the case of missing Madeleine are being kept up to date on findings with respect to the ongoing investigation into the activities of Rodríguez.  However as yet there has been no official link made between the cases.
