18.01.2008 - More than five years after the island’s governing corporation passed a motion to treat the masts as potentially hazardous elements, it has contacted local councils instructing them to carry out more thorough checks to see whether the masts are located in areas which could have an adverse impact on human health.

One council in particular, San Bartolomé de Tirajana in the south of Gran Canaria (where many complaints have been received from residents), has been told to make sure that applications to erect masts are vetted carefully and permission should only be given if all health safeguards are provided.

However, the announcement has been criticised by telecommunications engineers, who say that authoritative reports have shown no causal link between the masts and sickness.
