06.08.2010 - The 32-year-old man was arrested a few days after his wife, also a nurse, died apparently from natural causes in Las Palmas. A cousin contacted police to report that he had seen him throw away small boxes of thallium, a radioactive substance used in medical scans. “We were at Alcampo shopping just two days after Laura’s death and I noticed him discreetly dropping the boxes under a parked car. He said they were packs of chewing gum but I retrieved them later and when I saw what they really were I took them to the police” said the relative. A more detailed autopsy confirmed that the highly toxic substance, which can only be obtained in hospitals, was present in the deceased’s blood and organs. Police say the woman was poisoned over a long period of time using small doses of thallium.
