03.09.2010 - Interviewed by daily newspaper La Provincia, Mohammed Mahmoud addressed a number of issues of topical importance, from policing to the use of the veil by women.
Mahmoud, who is hosting two senior colleagues from Egypt who have arrived to assist with the readings of the Koran at the small mosque in Las Palmas during Ramadan, called on Spain to treat the Muslim religion in the same way as the Catholic Church in terms of funding and repeated his plea for Las Palmas council to build a modern mosque in the city to cater for the growing Muslim population.  Speaking of his own role and that of his fellow imams, Mahmoud stressed that they helped prevent crime by keeping young Muslims, particularly those who do not have work, on the straight and narrow and ensuring they are not susceptible to extremist influences (La Provincia headlined its interview “An imam prevents more crime than a hundred police officers”).  On the veil controversy, Mahmoud insisted that no Muslim parents would force their daughters to cover their head and/or face in public and, “if girls choose to do so, society should respect their decision”, adding that restricting personal freedom (if veils are banned) could have a disastrous effect.
