05.04.2015 - The H10 Meloneras has been given permission to carry out exploratory work over the next 12 months to assess the viability of drilling to a depth of 70 metres to extract seawater for use in the so-called low-enthalpy technique.

The technique takes advantage of temperature differences between the extracted water and the water returned to the sea after passing through a heat pump to generate electrical energy, which will be used to power the hotel’s air conditioning.  The hotel is to invest approximately €140,000 in the trial, which has been authorised by the Gran Canaria Water Board and, if successful, could be copied by other hotels on the coast.

A spokesman at the Water Board said the project was a key part of its commitment to increasing the use of renewable energy sources on the island.
