22.06.2015 - With the successful Loro Parque and Siam Park in Tenerife already behind them,

the Kiessling family has long wanted to expand their empire to the neighbouring island, a dream that will now be achieved by them building what will be the second biggest project of its kind in the world.

The Kiessling empire is headed by company president Wolfgang Kiessling and his son Christoph in his capacity as vice-president.  Christoph explained the forthcoming project to an excited crowd during the stone laying ceremony.  The Poema del Mar will be built on a total of 12,519 square metres at the La Luz port.  There will be several aquariums with over 7.5 million litres of saltwater and freshwater, which will form homes for different types of marine life, including typical species from the Canary Islands, the Azores and Cape Verde, and from various areas around the African coast.

As well as the 38 display tanks housing around 300 different types of fish, amphibians and reptiles, the park will also be home to various birds and small mammals.  The display tanks will be equipped with the very latest filtering and water treatment techniques.

As ever with the Keissling projects, a commitment to sustainable tourism, environmental education and protection will be key issues for the new installation and for this reason the Poema del Mar will be powered by renewable and environmentally-friendly energy sources: According to forecasts, by using its own photovoltaic system, the park will save emitting 2,400 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year.

The family’s hugely successful Loro Parque in the north of Tenerife is listed by Trip-Advisor as the best zoo in Europe and the third best in the world.  The Siam Park in the south was voted by Trip-Advisor customers as the best water park in the world.  Both parks have received numerous other national and international awards and distinctions.   The Loro Parque Foundation is also well known for its animal conservation work and its close collaboration with the University of Las Palmas during the last couple of decades.

The Poema del Mar complex will bring a boost to Las Palmas’ tourism offer and the new theme park will become an added attraction for cruise liner passengers.

The opening of the Poema del Mar giant aquarium is planned for 2017.
