Mother forced to carry disabled son
A Las Palmas woman who is waiting to be re-housed so she can care for her handicapped adult son properly appears to have come up with her own solution, much to the embarrassment of the authorities.

22.06.2015 - Pensioner Leonor Pérez has spent years carrying her son Manolo, a cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy sufferer, on her back, up and down the stairs to her third-floor flat in the city’s Lomo del Chinche district.  Her selfless devotion has received prominent coverage in the regional media, prompting a personal visit from the regional social services minister Inés Rojas recently.

However, despite promises of a remedy, Pérez is still forced to perform the daily routine of carrying Manolo up and down the flight of stairs to allow him to leave the flat and attend his care centre. According to the Canarias 7 newspaper, she has come up with her own solution after learning that a flat in a nearby block with a lift is empty and a swap deal may be feasible.  “The other place is much better as it only has five steps at the entrance to the building.  I would be happy to exchange and would continue to pay off my house while living across there” said Leonor, who was promised an accessible home and, in the meantime, adaptations to her current one to make her life easier. According to the paper, one month after the visit by Rojas neither solution had materialised and the long-suffering mother has decided to take the matter in hand herself.
