English out
The use of catchy English names for the Sunday opening campaigns in Las Palmas is to come to an end after a major rethink by the city authorities.

24.07.2015 - Names such as ‘LPA Sunday Shopping Party’ have been used until now to brand the initiatives to inject life into the Gran Canaria capital on those days but the councillor in charge believes the obsession with English could be backfiring.  “The name used for the past year needs to be rethought.  While English is clearly needed for tourist advertising campaigns, using it for this type of initiative denotes an inferiority complex, particularly bearing in mind that by far the bulk of the people in the main shopping areas on Sunday opening days are Spanish-speakers” said Pedro Quevedo.

The council has sent a list of fourteen Spanish names and slogans for the campaigns to city-centre traders to choose one to replace Sunday Shopping Party and the move has been widely welcomed by the shops.
