- Although final confirmation is not due until mid-June for non-Americans who will feature in the crucial selection of players by the teams in the world’s top league, it is believed that Rubio will occupy the second spot in the Draft, behind Blake Griffin of Oklahoma, the most coveted youngster in the country. Rubio, who turned 18 last year, shot to fame in the Beijing Olympics where he proved more than a match for more illustrious opponents as Spain’s reserve playmaker. It is not certain that he will move to the NBA immediately, however. Speculation is growing that his likely club, the Washington Wizards, prefer to pay DKV Joventut to allow him to stay in Spain for another year to gain more experience.
Five Spaniards currently play in the NBA, including All-Star Pau Gasol (Lakers) and Tenerife’s Sergio Rodríguez (Portland Trail Blazers).
