Table-topping Canarias
Who would have believed it? La Laguna basketball side CB Canarias are joint top of the world’s second best league after an impeccable start to the new season, the club’s second since returning to the ACB Liga Endesa last year after a 20-year absence.

01.11.2013 - Despite serious injuries to two key players, Canarias have picked up where they left off last season, when they put in a final sprint that almost saw them snatch a play-off spot.  Three wins from their opening three games, against Obradoiro, Zaragoza and Fuenlabrada, mean that Alejandro Martínez’s men sit prettily along with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Gran Canaria at the top of the table, with two mouth-watering games up next: Gran Canaria and Barcelona, both away.

The impeccable (not to say totally unexpected) start means that Canarias can afford to slip up in the coming weeks and not be in any danger of propping up the table, a far cry from their baptism of fire last season when they lost all six opening games.  Hero of the moment is centre Blagota Sekulic, who was the league’s MVP last week following his superb showing against Fuenlabrada.  The Montenegro international scored 32 points in the 90-82 win, which came just 48 hours after he became a father.  Sekuklic was understandably given permission to dash off immediately to his home town of Podgorica for five days to see his new son, but on condition that he is back for the crucial derby in Las Palmas this week-end.
