16.02.2014 - A storming start to the season saw the La Laguna premiership side, who only won promotion in summer 2012, move up as high as fifth at one stage and threaten the likes of Real Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona for honours.  However, three defeats in a row saw them slide down the table and look certain to miss out on one of the Top eight places eligible for the showcase Cup competition in Malaga.  The unexpected 78-83 home defeat against lowly Manresa, despite the support of a giant crowd of over 5,100 at the Santiago Martín stadium, seemed to have put paid to Iberostar’s chances of only a third ever Cup appearance in the club’s 75-year history.

However, fortune took a hand in matters and the three other teams who were in with a chance of qualification all lost later to lift the gloom in La Laguna and put Iberostar Tenerife on the plane to the Costa del Sol to meet the mighty Barcelona in the quarter final.  For the first time ever, two Canarian clubs make an appearance in the Cup competition, Gran Canaria already having secured their berth the previous week by finishing the first half of the season in fifth place.
