Goodbye CID
Hello Arena
Nearly three decades of basketball tradition came to an end earlier in the month when premiership side Gran Canaria played their last ever game at the CID stadium in the centre of Las Palmas.

29.04.2014 - The club’s new home venue is the brand new Gran Canaria Arena, which has been purpose built for the Basketball World Cup that takes place at the end of the summer, for which the island host one of the groups.  The departure from the CID stadium brought a tear to the eye of local fans who have turned out faithfully for 26 seasons to support their idols.  Although many are pleased with the switch to a more modern venue, others fear that the new court will mean a loss of the ‘fear factor’ that has proved to be a big part in the downfall of teams, who fail to cope with the hostile atmosphere at CID where fans were very close to the tight court.  The ribbon has already been cut at the Arena by Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy, but the first official game is not until May 1 when Gran Canaria takes on the mighty Barcelona.
