International football returns to Gran Canaria just a few weeks after Spain’s win over Northern Ireland on the island.
- A Canarian Select team is being put together to play Angola’s national side in a Christmas friendly on 28 December in Las Palmas.
The fixture has been lined up by the regional government, which says it will give fans the chance to see Canarian players currently playing in the top two divisions in Spain come together under one flag. Among those invited to join the squad are Silva (Valencia), Braulio (Getafe) and Fabricio (Deportivo La Coruña), as well as several players at Tenerife and Las Palmas.
Regional selects are becoming increasingly fashionable in Spain, particularly in Catalonia and the Basque Country, where Christmas friendlies against national sides have taken place for years. However, not all clubs are happy with the trend and some have refused permission for their players to take part in the ‘internationals’ due to the risk of injury.
