Subs debate
Valerón benching
Iconic Las Palmas footballer Juan Carlos Valerón has been meriting more media coverage for his presence on the substitutes’ bench than on the field of late.

11.05.2014 - The veteran ex-Spain midfielder, who returned to his native island last summer after a 13-year career in the top flight with Deportivo La Coruña, is still considered one of the most elegant players in the game and his arrival was considered a massive coup for Las Palmas, not to mention a bold statement of the club’s desire to return to the 1st Division after a long absence.  However, Valerón’s form has dipped in recent months and, having been an automatic first choice for much of the season, he was benched five times in a row by manager Sergio Lobera, failing to get even a minute in the defeat at against Mirandés.  His relegation to the bench has prompted countless pieces in the local papers, including surveys of coaches and players asking their views on his demotion. Lobera insist that he is administering his resources carefully for the run-in, which he hopes will see his team at least make the promotion play-offs.
