It was 61 years ago in 1946 when Christian Dior and Marcel Boussac founded the Christian Dior Fashion House in Paris. Carmel Snow, the then editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, exclaimed “It is such a New Look! Christian Dior has revolutionised fashion in the same way as the Marne taxis saved France”. Since then, it has been a continual success story.
- Dior’s first fashion show abroad was in Australia in 1947, and in 1948 the Dior Perfume Company was born. Hosiery followed in 1949 and by 1950 Dior was designing Marlene Dietrich’s dresses for Alfred Hitchcock’s film Stage Fright. 1953 was the year for Dior’s customised shoe lines and in 1954 he opened his first boutique in London.
By 1956 he had published two books and accumulated a long list of high profile clients. Christian Dior was remarkable on the world fashion stage as one of its most adventurous players and sadly in 1957 he died of a heart attack. At this point Yves Saint Laurent was appointed as Artistic Director.
The Dior house has dressed many celebrities for special occasions, film and theatre productions, including Olivia de Havilland, Elizabeth Taylor, Mia Farrow, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Liz Hurley, Christina Onassis, the list is endless. New lines have been introduced including the Slim Look, Miss Dior, Baby Dior and Monsieur, plus skincare, accessories and jewellery, and boutiques have been opened worldwide.
Sensational, classy, elegant, revolutionary and sophisticated – how else can you describe the Dior collections – with a look for each and every occasion. Look your very best in a Dior creation this party season!
