El Cedro Clinic
Face the future
Every day living can take its toll: pollutants and stress can have untold impact on our looks and health, and it’s our faces that usually suffer the most.

20.11.2013 - There are many aesthetic treatments available and one in particular – microdermabrasion - is becoming increasingly popular.  It is non-surgical, non invasive, takes just over an hour, isn’t painful, has no known side effects and you can walk out of the treatment centre and get straight on with your life.

Microdermabrasion is a powerful mechanical exfoliating treatment that leaves your face feeling soft, clean and fresh.  Not to mention looking a little younger.  It is one of the easiest and most effective anti-aging treatments you can indulge in.   It can help soften fine lines and wrinkles, decrease the appearance of scarring, smooth coarse skin and reduce age spots.  So far, so good!

We were invited to sit in on one of the treatments at the El Cedro Clinic in Adeje to see if it was really as good as it sounds and, intrigued, one fine afternoon we were privileged to watch Dr. Margarita Caliz in action at the clinic.

The treatment

As we arrive at the clinic and are passed into Dr. Caliz’s hands she does everything she can to make her client feel comfortable.  She has such a winning smile and friendly and open manner that I see Dave immediately relax.  Yes, the client is a man – not that unusual at all, says Dr. Caliz – she has many male clients and is genuinely pleased by their wish to make the best of themselves.  Dave is asked to take a seat on the treatment couch and whilst Dr. Caliz talks us through the procedure she carefully examines his face.

She explains that her Microdermabrasion machine uses the newer diamond-tip technology which is even gentler than the original crystal treatment.  It works by removing the uppermost layer of dead skin cells from the face.  This not only provides a deep clean but also makes it easier for high-tech skin care products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin.

The machine consists of a hand held wand which is passed over the skin.  Using vacuum technology, as the wand’s diamond tip exfoliates; the dead skin and impurities are sucked up into the tube.  Dave happily admits that he has neglected his face.  He does have many blackheads and some sun damage, but Dr Caliz is reassuring and kind as she gives his  face a thorough cleansing before beginning.

Then she starts passing the tip of the wand over every area of the face, slowly and meticulously, constantly checking that Dave isn’t feeling any discomfort.  Far from uncomfortable, Dave compares it to the light rasping of a cat’s tongue and though he can feel the vacuum action he says it is actually quite relaxing.

Once the whole of the face has been covered Dr. Caliz then begins taking out blackheads and other impurities by hand, very carefully, and Dave is loving it – he says it’s like being groomed!

Once again the wand is passed over any trouble areas and throughout the whole process relaxing music plays in the background and Dr. Caliz’s gentle voice continues to put everyone at ease as she tells us a little about herself.

She came to Tenerife three years ago from Venezuela.  It was there she first qualified, over 25 years ago, in general Medicine and surgery.  She later became interested in nutrition and took a Masters in the subject, before completing a further Masters in Aesthetic Medicine.   Over the years she had her own television and radio slots, a large and successful practice and was renowned throughout the country and further afield.

After arriving in the archipelago she spent time at the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid, studying for her next Masters in Aesthetic Medicine, before starting up on her own here in Tenerife.  She quite evidently enjoys her job saying she, “loves to see the smiles on her clients’ faces when they first look in the mirror.”

Throughout, Dr. Caliz continues to work on Dave’s face gently and methodically.  She usually recommends that people have the treatment once every six months, though those that live in cities may need it more often.

Once the actual cleaning process is finished she applies an anti-oxidant followed by a serum that contains, amongst other things, plenty of vitamin C.  Then a cucumber concentrate is placed on each eye, along with a soothing face mask.  Dave looks so relaxed by now that we leave him with a big smile on his face.   We return after about 10 minutes and the mask is removed.   How does Dave feel we wonder?  “Absolutely fantastic”, is his enthusiastic reply.  It will be a couple of days before the end results can be fully appreciated, but we can already see the difference.

One of the beauties of this treatment is that there isn’t any recovery time and clients can go straight from the clinic and on with their lives.   Not only that, but it is suitable for all skin types – though, obviously, it is important that an experienced and qualified therapist carries out the treatment.  Dave is advised to wear factor 50 sun cream for a few days – as the skin will be more sensitive, but apart from that, he is ready to go.

El Cedro Clinic has this particualr treatment on offer for the rest of the year at only €100 a session: an absolute bargain.  It could also be worth considering some of the other treatments Dr. Caliz offers, which include deep rehydration, varicose vein treatments, pigmentation and sun damage improvements and personalised nutrition advice.

Dr. Caliz works at the El Cedro clinic 9am to 1pm and 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday, except Wednesdays.   Email her at: or contact the El Cedro Clinic directly on: 922 781 625.  Alternatively, pop in to see them in Adeje at: C/ Tinerfe El Grande, 21 (opposite the Post Office).
