Dry/peeling nails
This is probably one of the most common nail problems and will take a little time to improve. However, with the correct treatment it will improve.

29.10.2009 - Aim: to achieve a healthy, strong but flexible nail that only needs maintaining rather than treating.

Salon treatment: regular, weekly manicures would be recommended for this client until the peeling part of the nail has grown out.  This can take some time, but some of the brands have special treatments for this condition that will speed up the process.  Weekly manicures for this common problem are usually recommended, this will give the technician the opportunity to remove new growth gently, treat and encourage a healthy nail and remove the peeling area as soon as possible.  These layers should not be allowed to grow until the edges of the nail plate are completely sealed.  The peeled layer encourages water to seep underneath and therefore causes more peeling.  The continued use of a nail edge treatment product and nail varnishes will help seal the edges until it has grown out.

Home Treatment:
The client should be recommended that she keeps her hands out of water as much as possible.  Re-application of the nail treatment every couple of days, with particular attention to the edge will help this condition to improve rapidly.  Clients should also be encouraged to nourish the new nail with oil or cream based treatments as these will penetrate the nail from the cuticle area and assist the healthy new growth.

Review:
This treatment can be continued for three to four weeks or until the damaged nail is nearly grown out.  At this point it will probably be necessary to strengthen the nail as you can start to let some length grow.  It may be advisable to alternate the nail treatment between a moisturising product (to combat dryness) and a strengthening product.  Care must be taken not to use the strengthening treatment for too long as this could result in a brittle nail!  Your nail technician’s experience should tell you how often this treatment should be undertaken.

Avoiding infections:
Fungal infections can be passed on from fungal spores which live on nail and skin and which get caught up in towels, shoes, tights and socks.  Remember that hands which are frequently submerged in water are more prone to bacterial and fungal infections.

To prevent catching a fungal nail infection:
• Avoid sharing towels or bath mats
• Wear suitable shoes or flip-flops in communal showers or around swimming pools
• Wash feet daily
• Dry feet and hands thoroughly each time they are washed
• Change shoes and tights/socks daily
• Wear gloves for daily chores such as gardening or housework.

As with every other part of the body, diet will affect the condition of your nails. Sufficient supplies of essential minerals such as iron and zinc will help prevent them from becoming brittle.
