 Local, regional and national sports news Olympics Barcelona bid for 2022 Winter Games Barcelona is to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics, according to the Catalan capital’s mayor.  “The change in approach by the IOC, which is now more amenable to Winter Olympics being staged by big cities within reasonable distances of the slopes, as occurred in Turin, should work to our favour” said mayor Jordi Hereu. Leaked details of closely-guarded preliminary plans suggest that the bid will propose staging the main ceremonies and the indoor events (ice hockey, skating, curling etc) in the city, with the outdoor events taking place in various locations in the Pyrenees. However, news of the bid has already attracted criticism in Spain due to the competition it poses for Jaca, which has already announced it wants to try again in 2022. To date no city has ever hosted both the Summer and the Winter Olympics, though Munich, where the 1972 Summer Games were held, is in the bidding for the 2018 Winter event.
