It would have been more of a surprise if David Silva, the Gran Canarian midfielder who plays for Valencia, and was one of the stars of Euro 2008, had been left out. His skills and talent are in no doubt and with over 30 international appearances already under his cap he is a vital member of the team. Born in Arguineguín, he has scored six times for his country. When Spain’s manager del Bosque announced his pre-World Cup team of 30 players two of the inclusions from the Barcelona squad, goalkeeper Victor Valdés and Pedro Rodríguez, were expected. However many did think that when it came to the crunch the ex-Madrid manager wouldn’t actually choose either of the them for the final 23 – but how wrong can you be. Choosing, as he said, with his head and his heart, he decided to give Valdés and the young Tenerife player Pedrito the call-up. The striker from Abades has been the season's biggest success story, and made world football history during the season by becoming the only player to score in six different club competitions at national and international level. Both players are excellent at scoring when it matters most, and could make the difference in any one of Spain’s games.
