Aside from the poor performances for all but the last stretch of the season, the paper thinks ‘higher forces’ may have had a say in matters and has published details of a secret bid by a Qatari sheikh to buy Malaga FC, who were saved from relegation thanks to a draw against Real Madrid on the final day.  The paper’s well-informed Churchill Column points out that the multiple business interests of the sheikh in question, a nephew of the country’s emir, include a lucrative arrangement with European construction giant Hochtief to build a new city in Qatar. The deal is thought to have been signed on 26 May, ten days after the season ended. Among Hochtief’s leading shareholders is Spanish construction firm ACS, which is owned by Florentino Pérez, the chairman of Real Madrid.

‘Churchill’ has put two and two together and worked out that the sheikh needed Malaga, who had not won for several weeks, to stay in the top flight to be a viable business investment and the team who could help ensure safety was Real Madrid. A helping hand on the football field would also be valuable to securing the new city contract for Hochtief. Coincidence or conspiracy theory?
