14.08.2010 - Their two previous pre-season wins against lower league teams, Marino 0-4 and UD Ibarra 2-5, had been expected but the Zaragoza game provided the blanquiazules with their first real test. A steamy Los Cuartos Stadium in La Orotava was at bursting point as over 6,000 fans attended the game eager to see the ‘new’ Tenerife side. The style of play of new coach Arconada is very similar to ex-boss Oltra with hopefully a more resolute defence! The tick-a-taka football may not be of the same class as Spain and FC Barcelona but that is the philosophy of the new look team. The first half started with Tenerife pushing forward with great enthusiasm. Young winger Omar created havoc down the wings with his trickery and he could well be one of the stars of the season. The deadlock was broken on just 11 minutes as Ricardo found Nino in the box and the goal-king, who has just signed a new three year deal to stay in Tenerife, finished in emphatic style. Zaragoza had enjoyed a good pre-season and had been on tour in England last week beating Wigan 1-3. Half-time brought the usual batch of substitutions for a friendly game and the second half lost some of its intensity. Zaragoza substitutes included ex-Liverpool player Jermaine Pennant who came off the bench. He had been transfer listed in the summer but he is now fighting to keep his place at the La Liga club. As frustration grew for the visitors a few rash tackles started to fly around and this ignited the game once again for the final stages. Tenerife had chances to increase their lead with impressive new signing Natalio coming close and Marc Bertran making several penetrating runs into the box. This Tenerife side promises great things this season. Zaragoza could hardly muster a serious effort on goal during the closing minutes and the blanquiazules deservedly won the match 1-0. Omar won the Man of the Match and Captain Marc Bertran collected the Teide Trophy from Dámaso Arteaga of the Island council. Tenerife now moves on to the mainland for three more matches against UD Almeria, Orihuela and a three way tournament against Real Betis and Benidorm. Their final warm up game will be the official presentation game on the 20th/21st of August in the Heliodoro Stadium in Santa Cruz. The rival has not yet been confirmed but rumours suggest that it will be a top Greek or Turkish side, possibly Besiktas.
