 Local, regional and national sports news Javier Pérez dies Javier Pérez will be remembered by all fans of CD Tenerife football as the man who brought the club to top of their form, playing for many years in the top division at national level, and making their mark on the international stage.  Acknowledged as “the architect of Tenerife at its best”, Peréz was at the helm of the blanquiazul ship between 1986 and 2002. Born in Barlovento (La Palma) brought up in Cuba and studied in Granada. He mounted a campaign with the ‘Alternativa Azul y Blanca’ to take over a club that had descended into the second division B, riddled with debt, and within a year CD Tenerife was back in the second division A. Soon the club was boasting names that would go down in history, such as Guina and Romel Fernández, all part of the steady rise back to the top league in Spanish football for the first time in 27 years. Their time at the top also saw the club qualify for the first time in their history for the UEFT cup, where they made it to the semi-finals against Schalke 04 in the 1996-97 season.
