Hotel Gran Rey
The oyster in your world
There is something almost magical about Valle Gran Rey, the small but incredibly delightful village on ‘the other side’ of La Gomera.

10.08.2010 - As any one who has already been to the island will affirm, La Gomera offers a world apart from the hustle and bustle of South Tenerife, and is where words like ‘disconnect’, and ‘relax and recharge’ really do come into their own. With a selection of beaches to choose from to suit families, holiday makers and even those who like to strip down to the bare essentials (playa del ingles), some excellent eateries, and a nice range of shops in the port, the town and La Playa, Valle Gran Rey retains a laid back air that is perfect for breaks of all durations. Right in the middle of the zone is the well appointed Hotel Gran Rey. Though three star in rating, it’s five star in the level of treatment and care you receive as a guest. Relatively small in scale, the hotel boasts a family feel to it, with emphasis on making you feel at home from the minute you check in. All rooms have balconies, either facing the impressive valley from which the zone gets its name (Valley of the Great King) or a sea view from where quite spectacular sunsets are the norm. Apart from the nearby beaches the hotel has a roof top pool with a kiddies’ pool and play area below, and always enough sun loungers. Food is buffet style, but the added touch is quite simply the staff, from receptionists to waiters and waitresses, who make it their businesses to know you from day one, paying attention to children and their likes and dislikes, always on hand to help you and offer advice about the town, what’s on, where to go, how to get there, etc. And many of the team have been there for years and will remember you if this is not your first visit – the human touch that can’t be faked. Offering a quieter break (there are no late night discos here or loud activities on offer, though guides to the mountains, talks, and information on excursions are available), the Hotel Gran Rey is also a world leader in environmental care within the industry, and has won numerous awards, national and international, for its ongoing integrated sustainability practises and ethics. While the hotel has and continues to cater for many German visitors who come for the excellent rural walks the zone has to offer, more and more families from Spain have discovered this jewel in the crown of the King of the Valley and it is a favourite for many from other Canary Islands for a short term stay, linked quite easily to Tenerife by the Fred Olsen fleet – you can either sail to the island’s capital San Sebastían and drive across to Valle Gran Rey or take the passenger ferry which brings you to the small port that is only a ten minute walk from the hotel – ideal if you’re not planning to stray too far as everything is within walking distance.
