 Product news, company profiles Dr. Chanut Don’t underestimate night grinding One person out of every three damages their teeth by grinding them at night, and the tendency is on the increase.  Modern day living and a stressful lifestyle contribute to the problem of night grinding. Jaw muscles are tense and tired and are poorly positioned during the night. Women particulary seem to tend to keep their anger tapped during the day and therefore take it to bed with them. There is often a relation between the condition and the dream phase of sleeping. If your life is unbalanced or you suffer from interuppted breathing patterns at night the likelyhood of grinding also increases. Often the reason is also a badly positioned jawbone. If this is the case you have the opposite muscles struggling to meet leading to teeth grinding during the night. In between five and ten per cent of the cases there is cranial mandibular dysfunction, or CMD. In this case it’s not just the teeth that are grinding but the whole jawbone is in action. One indicator of this would hearing the sound of bone moving or cracking when opening the mouth. Nightime jaw activity is something to be taken seriously. It harms the teeth through wear and tear and can have a bad effect on the body in general. If a CMD is allowed to continue undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to problems with neck muscles and headaches or even migraines. Pelvic distortion or painful tinnitus are other possible developments. Night grinding also disturbs the sleep of our partners. What is important is that the condition is recognised, and help is sought. If you don’t sleep alone no doubt you will have been alerted to the condition by your partner. If not, a stiff neck on the morning, or headaches should be taken seriously as warning signs of the condition. There are many different methods available to alleviate the situation. A mouth guard worn at night is one possiblity. Whatever you decide to do, the situation must be dealt with and sufferers should consult a dentist as soon as possible.
