Tourism in freefall, admits minister
Canarian tourism minister Rita Martín is back in the headlines, this time for her realistic admission that the sector is in freefall at present.

Canary Islands - 09.03.2009 - Having been criticised on several occasions for painting an overly-optimistic picture of the industry in recent months, Martín is now drawing fire for giving a bleak forecast to the region's Parliament. 'The sector is in freefall and there is no way of knowing when things will improve. The pound's weakness against the euro is forcing British tourists to look to dollar destinations. The Canaries used to 'sell themselves' unaided but we now need strategies to compete with rivals' said the minister, who urged the Spanish government to cut airport charges to attract airlines.
